Rockin’ it at Rockwheelers XC5
Another weekend has come and gone and that means WMTBC members were once again on the hunt for some sweet single-track to ride (and race)!!
This time the crew headed North to the blistering hot Townsville where four members tackled the Townsville Rockwheelers cross-country series race. The club lived up to it’s name delivering a rocky trail very different to the trails in Airlie Beach. It was a hot, dry and dusty trail with some killer climbs and fun flowing descents.
The race was held at the Ross River Dam which riders have limited access to due to the nature of the dam – many of the members were pleased to ride the trails in the daylight ahead of the Dam Dark 12 hour race which the WMTBC intends to enter four teams into (more info on Facebook).
All riders had a lot of fun and we very impressed with the organisation of the club and how smoothly everything went! Again we had some outstanding results with our ladies back on the podium; Leigh Smith taking 2nd place in the Female Super Masters and Chris Labes took number one in the Elite Female division, claiming 30th position in a field of close to 90 riders!! Other WMTBC members less keen on racing rode the newly developed ‘Under the Radar’ trail at Pallarenda; the smiles on their faces was evidence that they’d had a blast and the sweat dripping form their brows’ meant it was time for lunch before heading to the hills of Douglas Mountain Bike Reserve where the Rock N Roll trail (and Meat Grinder) left the riders in no doubt that the day trip to Townsville was well worth it, and we’ll certainly be back a lot more often!!!
