Why sleep when you can ride?
That was the motto at the Dam Dark 12-hour Mountain Bike race held in Townsville over the weekend.
The Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club entered three teams and one solo rider; the Airlie Beach Bicycle Brothers (Justin Lyons, Dan Millard & Ash Hogan) took out 1st place in the teams’ category riding to a strong victory with 34 laps in 11 hours 56 minutes.
The South Molle Spokesmen (Bob Clanfield, Rodney Mills & Mick Sorley) narrowly missed out on a podium finish with 26 laps and the Whitsunday Women of Dirt (Sam Sorley, Leigh Smith & Sharon Mills) put in a solid effort riding through 11 hours and 38 minutes taking 14 laps.
Solo rider Chris Labes battled it out all night with neighbouring Mad MTBC member Dylan Coppo, finally conceding 20 laps (136km) to his 22; not a bad effort for the pair’s first solo 12 hour attempts.
The event was hosted by the Townsville Rockwheelers at their Ross Dam trails. Starting at 6.30pm riders completed laps of a 7km circuit until 6.30am the following day, to keep it interesting the track was changed every four hours and they also had challenges happening throughout the night – well done to Dan Millard who showed true dedication to his team drinking a ‘Rocktail’ (non-alcoholic concoction) and braving gravel rash and saddle sores on the 3am nudie lap to secure time advantages.
“We’ll definitely be back next year, we’re already making plans” Justin Lyons, WMTBC.
