This is in relation to safety concerns with the year-round access to the Whitsunday Great Walk trail through Conway National Park. We have not sent this to QWPS yet but the WMTBC would like your feedback and opinion:
The Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club Inc. is requesting you consider closing the Whitsunday Great Walk during the wet season:
- It poses a significant safety threat to trail users due to the rapid changes in conditions caused by heavy rainfall
- And it puts unnecessary pressure on those performing trail maintenance
We believe closing the Whitsunday Great Walk from the 10km point (Footbridge) through to the 26km mark (Honey Eater turn-off) for the months of January to March would be the best option thus allowing trail users to ride in from either end and enjoy the beauty of the trail, safely.
Trail maintenance resources can be best utilised ensuring these two access points are maintained to a high standard and preparing the trail for the dry season from April onwards.
The 2013/14 wet season has been our first as an incorporated club and our experience has been that few club members desire the ability to ride through the trail over this period. Furthermore visitors to the region have little knowledge of the weather conditions and subsequent threats our tropical climate poses.
