Congratulations…

We have officially opened our first MTB Specific track in the Whitsundays at Big4 Airlie Cove Resort & Van Park.

We had a great turnout with over 60 people on the day and 20 new members joining the club.

The WMTBC are hoping this will boost interest in the sport and add more driving power behind their application to convert a block of Unallocated State Land into a sports and recreation reserve for mountain biking. Other centres such as Atherton in the Tablelands and Derby in Tasmania have undertaken similar projects in the last five years with Atherton now attracting an average of 1500 riders over a weekend to their trails and the initiative labelled a “catalyst for economic turn around” in Derby.

Sports tourism represents a $12.8 billion dollar industry for Australia. Judy Porter from the Whitsunday Coast Chamber of Commerce spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony and emphasised the fact that mountain biking tracks based on the mainland of Airlie Beach will strengthen the entire region’s tourism pull for families.

Club members that did not attend on Sunday can collect their Airlie Cove Wristband from reception next time you ride at Airlie Cove.

2016 Committee Meeting – All Welcome

Friday 26th, 5.30pm
View this email in your browser

Committee Meeting & Calendar Planning, Friday Feb 26, 5.30p

Out front of the Burger Shop near Ride Whitsundays

We will be discussing:
– Trail opening party 5th & 6th at Airlie Cove including club sign-on, BBQ etc.
– We’ll be setting dates for regular club rides through Conway Circuit (please volunteer if you’re able to be the TL)
– Discussing our next Endruo Race

Also for the agenda, some homework please:
I’ve been looking for an app that can provide us with real time statistics on trail usage in the Whitsundays.
It seems the best answer (as suggested by Rockwheelers who are already implementing this and encouraging riders to join up) is the newly released TrailForks by Pink Bike.

The main reason I’ve been searching for a resource like this is so we can easily collate statistics on numbers or riders and even demographic statistics on those riders. How many women are riding each week, how many kids etc.

By linking our Strava accounts to Trailforks we can automatically gain access to all this information and riders don’t even need to ‘check in’ in order for us to have accurate stats. We just need to encourage more people to use Strava and to link their accounts.

I would like to encourage you all to have a look at their website and perhaps create an account to grasp an understanding of this resource.
I’ve listed WMTBC as a club which is pending approval.

Any questions, ideas, concerns, suggestions please fire them through.

Any other topics for the agenda send them in.

New Tracks for Airlie Cove

The WMTBC & BIG4 Airlie Cove Resort & Caravan Park have a very special Christmas gift for the MTB community; work has begun on trails within Airlie Cove’s property!!

The WMTBC have been working with Airlie Cove & McLean Projects from Townsville for the past two years developing the proposal and work on the project started this week.

The trails will not be ready until the New Year but stay tuned as WMTBC members will be given an opportunity to assist with trail crafting, bedding in and we will be organising a trail opening party in conjunction with the park!

Thanks to all Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club Inc. members because without your continued membership and support of the club we cannot keep pushing ahead with projects.

Special thanks finally to the staunchest supporters of the WMTBC Sam & Michael John Sorley and Bob Clanfield for all your time you devote to the WMTBC and to this project.

Stay tuned for a very exciting future of MTB for the Whitsundays!!
